The Edinburgh Scene

Edinburgh is a great place for un-famous ‘musicians’ like myself. Most pubs around town run open mic nights regularly, the biggest of which is Out of the Bedroom – a place that encourages inexperienced muso’s to get ‘out of the bedroom’ and performing in public. They only allow original music.

I have played at Whistle Binkies and Blue Blazer, two very different venues. Whistle Binkies is a student music pub with stage and sound desk, and enough performers to last well into the wee hours. Blue Blazer uses a very small room, with no amplification, for a very intimate gig. I had awesome fun there when the other performers joined in for my songs using anything they could find – the side of a guitar case, harmonica, a half empty pint of beer.

I had performed in public before, but never my own stuff, and the reaction I received from the audiences so far has been very encouraging. I was invited by the organiser to come along and play my songs at Out of the Bedroom, but I will wait until I am more comfortable with a few more of my originals before going along. I hope to have a go sometime before I come back to New Zealand though.

Below is a video of me playing my first original at Whistle Binkies… my unprofessional debut!

Be kind.
